Ostinato Life

from Inception by James Hoskins

/

about

Ostinato translates as “Obstinate” – from Italian, and describes a continually repeating musical phrase or rhythm. I chose the scale based upon ‘C’ known in Turkish as “Kurd” (Phrygian mode). The notes of Ab major (Ab Bb C Db Eb F G) are used, but based upon the 3rd, or C, and I then used an insistent rhythm throughout the piece. Using drop notes which, when varied, create a sense of chordal movement, and having sections of sparser sound, it felt as though I was telling the story of a life as I went along. Even now as I listen back, I find myself rooting for the ‘person’ in the story to make it through the intense life events they seem to be experiencing.
